As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 33121 inhabitants. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 36739, It is 64th most populous county in North Carolina. It covers total area of 494.5 square miles (1280.75 sq km), of which, 490.71 square miles (1270.93 sq km) of it is land and 3.79 square miles (9.82 sq km) of it is water, it is the 50th largest in terms of geographical size.

The July 2008 population estimate is 36739, The racial makeup of the county was 31187 White, 893 Black or African American, 3850 American Indian, 264 Asian, 9 Native Hawaiian, and 536 from two or more races.
