Jackson County is one of the 83 county of Michigan, located towards the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. The population of the county was 158422 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 160180, It is the 14th most populous county in the U.S. state of Michigan. It has total area of 723.76 sq mi (1874.53 square kilometre), of which, 706.6 square miles (1830.09 square kilometre) of it is land and 17.17 square miles (44.47 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the 42nd largest by total area among Michigan's county.

As of the census of 2000, there were 158422 people, 58168 households, and 40840 families living in the county. The population density was 224.2 people per square mile (86.56/kmē), giving it the 17th most densely populated county among the Michigan. There were 62906 housing units at an average density of 89 per square mile (34.36/kmē). The average household size was 2.55 persons, and the average family size was 3.03 persons. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 25.6% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 30.4% from 25 to 44, 23% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 104.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103.7 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 160180, The racial makeup of the county was 89.18% White, 7.7% Black or African American, 0.46% American Indian, 0.73% Asian, 0.06% Native Hawaiian, and 1.88% from two or more races.
