The county extends throughout a territory of 649.75 sq mi (1682.84 sq km ), of which, 636.09 square miles (1647.47 sq km) of it is land and 13.66 square miles (35.38 sq km) of it is water, it is the 19th largest by area in the U.S. state of Iowa. It is ranks tenth in the size of its inland waterways in Iowa.
