The population of the county was 59612 as per the 2000 census data. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 58264, It is Illinois's 25th most populous county. It covers total area of 602.53 square miles (1560.55 sq km), of which, 588.12 square miles (1523.22 sq km) of it is land and 14.4 square miles (37.3 sq km) of it is water, it is the 37th largest by area in the U.S. state of Illinois.
