The county extends throughout a territory of 343 sq mi (888.37 square kilometre ), of which, 342.36 square miles (886.71 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.64 square miles (1.66 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 84th largest by area in the U.S. state of Georgia.

For every 100 males there were 99.6 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 102.2 females. Its population was estimated at 61620 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 55125 White, 4759 Black or African American, 88 American Indian, 1033 Asian, 3 Native Hawaiian, and 612 from two or more races.
