In July 2008, its estimated population was 53134, It is 24th most populous county in Alabama. The county comprises an area of 1126.77 mi˛ (2918.32 sq km), of which, 1078.74 square miles (2793.92 sq km) of it is land and 48.02 square miles (124.37 sq km) of it is water, giving it the fifth largest by total area among Alabama's county. It is ranks sixth in the size of its inland waterways in Alabama.
