Itasca County is a one of the county from Minnesota's 87 counties, located in Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 43992. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 44512, making it Minnesota's 21st largest county. It has total area of 2927.78 square miles (7582.92 square kilometre), of which, 2665.06 square miles (6902.47 square kilometre) of it is land and 262.72 square miles (680.44 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the sixth largest by area in the U.S. state of Minnesota. It is ranks seventh in the size of its inland waterways in Minnesota.

As of the census of 2000, there were 43992 people, 17789 households, and 12385 families living in the county. The population density was 16.5 people per square mile (6.37/kmē), giving it the 26th least densely populated county among the Minnesota. There were 24528 housing units at an average density of 9.2 per square mile (3.55/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.43 persons, and the average family size was 2.91 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 24.4% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 26.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 99.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.2 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 44512, The racial makeup of the county was 94.1% White, 0.28% Black or African American, 3.74% American Indian, 0.33% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 1.53% from two or more races.
