As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 10231, It is the 32nd smallest in terms of population. The county spans an area of 362.73 sq mi (939.47 sq km), of which, 356.81 square miles (924.13 sq km) of it is land and 5.92 square miles (15.33 sq km) of it is water, making it Georgia's 73rd largest county by total area.

For every 100 males there were 103.5 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 112.2 females. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 10231, The racial makeup of the county was 71.35% White, 27.38% Black or African American, 0.16% American Indian, 0.63% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.48% from two or more races.
