Iron County, Wisconsin


Iron County is a county located in Wisconsin, in the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 6861 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 6197, giving it the third smallest population among Wisconsin's county. The county encompasses an area of 919.24 sq mi (2380.82 square kilometre ), of which, 757.23 square miles (1961.22 square kilometre) of it is land and 162.01 square miles (419.6 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 26th largest in terms of geographical size.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 6861 people, 3083 households, and 1960 families living in the county. The population density was 9.1 people per square mile (3.51/kmē), making its Wisconsin's least densely populated county. There were 5706 housing units at an average density of 7.5 per square mile (2.9/kmē). The average household size was 2.19 people, and the average family size was 2.74 people. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 19.4% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 26.8% from 45 to 64, and 23.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.8 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 6197, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 6057 White, 10 Black or African American, 57 American Indian, 15 Asian, 3 Native Hawaiian, and 55 from two or more races.
