Iron County, Michigan is a county located in the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. It is home to over 13138 people (2000 census). As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 12001, making it Michigan's 12th smallest county. Its area is just over 1211.02 mi˛ (3136.53 sq km), of which, 1166.36 square miles (3020.86 sq km) of it is land and 44.67 square miles (115.69 sq km) of it is water, making it Michigan's 28th largest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 13138 people, 5748 households, and 3614 families living in the county. The population density was 11.3 people per square mile (4.36/km˛), making it the seventh least densely populated county in Michigan. There were 8772 housing units at an average density of 7.5 per square mile (2.9/km˛). The average household size was 2.19 and the average family size was 2.76. In the Iron County, 20.6% of the population was under the age of 18, 6% were 18 to 24, 22.8% were 25 to 44, 25.3% were 45 to 64, and 25.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.5 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 12001, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 95.72% White, 1.5% Black or African American, 1.22% American Indian, 0.23% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 1.33% from two or more races.
