It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 67831, It is the sixth largest in terms of population. The city comprises an area of 24.44 mi˛ (63.3 sq km), of which, 24.16 square miles (62.57 sq km) of it is land and 0.28 square miles (0.73 sq km) of it is water, making it the 12th largest by size in Iowa.

As of the census of 2000, there were 62220 people in the city, organized into 25202 households, and 11200 families living in the city. The population density was 2575 people per square mile (994.21/km˛), it is eighth most densely populated city in Iowa. There were 26083 housing units at an average density of 1079.6 per square mile (416.84/km˛). The average household size was 2.23 persons, and the average family size was 2.9 persons.
