It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 3002555, It is 30th most populous in United States. Its area is just over 56271.55 mi˛ (145742.65 sq km), of which, 55869.36 square miles (144700.98 sq km) of it is land and 402.2 square miles (1041.69 sq km) of it is water, making it United States's 26th largest by total area.

The population density was 52.4 people per square mile (20.23/km˛), making its United States's 33rd most densely populated state. There were 1232511 housing units at an average density of 22.1 per square mile (8.53/km˛). The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3. In the state Age distribution was 25.1% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 103.9 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 107.1 females. The median age was 36.6 years, the median age of male residents at 35.2 and the median age of female residents at 38. In July 2008, its estimated population was 2926324, The racial makeup of the state was 2748640 White, 61853 Black or African American, 8989 American Indian, 36635 Asian, 1009 Native Hawaiian, 31778 from two or more races and 37420 Ohter races.
