Inyo County is a United States county located in the United States of California. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 17945 inhabitants. Its population was estimated at 17136 in July 2008, making it the sixth least populous county in California. The county extends throughout a territory of 10226.98 sq mi (26487.76 kmē ), of which, 10203.1 square miles (26425.91 kmē) of it is land and 23.88 square miles (61.85 kmē) of it is water, it is the second largest in terms of geographical size.

As of the census of 2000, there were 17945 people in the county, organized into 7703 households, and 4937 families residing in the county. The population density was 1.8 people per square mile (0.69/kmē), it is second least densely populated county in California. There were 9042 housing units at an average density of 0.9 per square mile (0.35/kmē). The average household size was 2.31 persons, and the average family size was 2.88 persons. In the Inyo County, 24.4% of the population was under the age of 18, 5.8% were 18 to 24, 23.4% were 25 to 44, 27.3% were 45 to 64, and 19.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.9 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 17136, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 14285 White, 61 Black or African American, 2062 American Indian, 229 Asian, 17 Native Hawaiian, and 482 from two or more races.
