Independence City is a city located in Polk County, Oregon, in the Western Region (Pacific) of United States. It is home to over 6035 people (2000 census). As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 9375, It is the 75th largest by population in the U.S. state of Oregon. The city comprises an area of 2.42 miē (6.27 kmē), of which, 2.33 square miles (6.03 kmē) of it is land and 0.09 square miles (0.23 kmē) of it is water, it is the 112th largest by area in the U.S. state of Oregon.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 6035 people, 16 households, and 12 families residing in the city. The population density was 2585.8 people per square mile (998.38/kmē), making it the 76th most densely populated city in Oregon. There were 2131 housing units at an average density of 914.6 per square mile (353.13/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.98 persons, and the average family size was 3.41 persons. In the city the population was distributed as follows: 30.5% under the age of 18, 14.1% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.5 males. The median age was 28.9 years, The median age of males was 28.1 years, for females the median age was 29.8 years. The racial makeup of the city was 73.69% White, 0.41% Black or African American, 1.49% American Indian, 0.58% Asian, 0.36% Native Hawaiian, 3.83% from two or more races and 19.64% Other races.
