Independence City is a city located in Jackson and Clay counties, Missouri, in the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 113288. The July 2008 population estimate is 110440, making it Missouri's fourth largest. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 78.45 sq mi (203.18 kmē), of which, 78.33 square miles (202.87 kmē) of it is land and 0.13 square miles (0.34 kmē) of it is water, making it the third largest by size in Missouri.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 113288 residents, 47390 households, and 30544 families in the city. The population density was 1446.3 people per square mile (558.42/kmē), it is Missouri's 192nd most densely populated city. There were 50213 housing units at an average density of 641 per square mile (247.49/kmē). The average household size was 2.37 people, and the average family size was 2.93 people. The population's age distribution was 23.9% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 23% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who were 65 or older. The median age is 37.8 years, the median age of male residents at 36 and the median age of female residents at 39.5. The racial makeup of the city was 104081 White, 2939 Black or African American, 721 American Indian, 788 Asian, 523 Native Hawaiian, 2619 from two or more races and 1617 Ohter races.
