Independence City is a city in the Buchanan County, Iowa, United States. As per the 2000 census, city has a population of 6014 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 6119, It is the 59th largest in terms of population. The city has a total area of 3.84 miē (9.95 kmē), of which, 3.71 square miles (9.61 kmē) of it is land and 0.13 square miles (0.34 kmē) of it is water, it is the 100th largest in terms of geographical size.

As of the census of 2000, there were 6014 residents, 2432 households, and 1588 families in the city.
