Illinois is a United States's state located in the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 12419293 inhabitants. The July 2008 population estimate is 12901563, giving it the fifth largest population among United States. It has total area of 57914.38 square miles (149997.56 sq km), of which, 55583.58 square miles (143960.81 sq km) of it is land and 2330.79 square miles (6036.72 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 25th largest by total area among United States. It is ranks 20 in the size of its inland waterways in United States.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 12419293 people, 4591779 households, and 3105513 families residing in the state. The population density was 223.4 people per square mile (86.26/kmē), it is 11th most densely populated state in United States. There were 4885615 housing units at an average density of 87.9 per square mile (33.94/kmē). The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.23. In the state the population was spread out, with 26.1% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 104.3 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 107.7 females. The median age is 34.7 years, The median age of males was 33.3 years, for females the median age was 36 years. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 12419293, The racial or ethnic makeup of the state was 9125471 White, 1876875 Black or African American, 31006 American Indian, 423603 Asian, 4610 Native Hawaiian, 235016 from two or more races and 722712 Ohter races.
