Hyde County is a one of the county from North Carolina's 100 counties, located in Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Hyde County is home to 5826 inhabitants. Its population was estimated at 5181 in July 2008, making it North Carolina's second smallest county. The county extends throughout a territory of 1424 square miles (3688.14 sq km ), of which, 612.8 square miles (1587.14 sq km) of it is land and 811.2 square miles (2101 sq km) of it is water, it is the second largest by area in the U.S. state of North Carolina. It is ranks third in the size of its inland waterways in North Carolina.

The population density was 9.5 people per square mile (3.67/kmē), it is North Carolina's least densely populated county. There were 3302 housing units at an average density of 5.4 per square mile (2.08/kmē). The average household size was 2.36 people, and the average family size was 2.94 people. The population's age distribution was 20.4% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 112.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 115.6 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 5181, The racial makeup of the county was 3256 White, 1839 Black or African American, 20 American Indian, 25 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 41 from two or more races.
