Hutchinson County is a United States county located in the United States of South Dakota. It is home to over 8075 people (2000 census). As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 7250, making it South Dakota's 23rd largest county. The county encompasses an area of 814.37 mi˛ (2109.21 sq km ), of which, 812.82 square miles (2105.19 sq km) of it is land and 1.55 square miles (4.01 sq km) of it is water, making it South Dakota's 39th largest county by total area.

The population density was 9.9 people per square mile (3.82/km˛), it would be the 21st most densely populated county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. There were 3517 housing units at an average density of 4.3 per square mile (1.66/km˛). The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 3.03. In the county Population was distributed with 24.9% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 22.1% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 26.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.7 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 7250, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 98.47% White, 0.11% Black or African American, 0.86% American Indian, 0.15% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.41% from two or more races.
