Huntsville City, Madison and Limestone counties, Alabama is a city located in the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. It is home to over 158216 people (2000 census). As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 176645, It is the fourth largest by population in the U.S. state of Alabama. Its area is just over 174.43 sq mi (451.77 kmē), of which, 174.05 square miles (450.79 kmē) of it is land and 0.38 square miles (0.98 kmē) of it is water, it is the largest by area in the U.S. state of Alabama.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 158216 people, 66742 households, and 41742 families living in the city. The population density was 909 people per square mile (350.97/kmē), making it the 63rd most densely populated city in Alabama. There were 73670 housing units at an average density of 423.3 per square mile (163.44/kmē). The average household size was 2.29 people, and the average family size was 2.91 people. In the city the population was spread out, with 23.1% under the age of 18, 10.7% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 107.7 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 111.4 females. The median age was 36.7 years, the median age of male residents at 35.2 and the median age of female residents at 38.1. The racial or ethnic makeup of the city was 64.47% White, 30.21% Black or African American, 0.54% American Indian, 2.22% Asian, 0.06% Native Hawaiian, 1.84% from two or more races and 0.66% Other races.
