Hughes County is a county located in the United States of South Dakota. In 2000, county's population was 16481 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 16746, giving it the 11th largest population among South Dakota's county. The county has a total area of 800.29 square miles (2072.74 square kilometre), of which, 740.92 square miles (1918.97 square kilometre) of it is land and 59.37 square miles (153.77 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 43rd largest in terms of geographical size. It is ranks sixth in the size of its inland waterways in South Dakota.

The population density was 22.2 people per square mile (8.57/kmē), giving it the 11th most densely populated county among the South Dakota. In the county Age distribution was 27.8% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 92.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 16746, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 86.8% White, 0.44% Black or African American, 10.4% American Indian, 0.69% Asian, 0.05% Native Hawaiian, and 1.62% from two or more races.
