Hughes County is a United States county located in the United States of Oklahoma. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 14154 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 13625, It is the 49th largest in terms of population. It is spread over 814.64 square miles (2109.91 square kilometre), of which, 806.73 square miles (2089.42 square kilometre ) of it is land and 7.9 square miles (20.46 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the 38th largest by total area among Oklahoma's county.

As of the census of 2000, there were 14154 people, 5319 households, and 3677 families living in the county. The population density was 17.5 people per square mile (6.76/kmē), making it the 49th most densely populated county in Oklahoma. There were 6237 housing units at an average density of 7.7 per square mile (2.97/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.42 persons, and the average family size was 2.96 persons. The population's age distribution was 23.2% under the age of 18, 8% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 105.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 105.5 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 13625, The racial makeup of the county was 71.67% White, 4.78% Black or African American, 17.12% American Indian, 0.24% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 6.16% from two or more races.
