Huerfano County is one of the 63 county of Colorado, located towards the Western Region (Mountain) of United States. The population of the county was 7862 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 7938, It is Colorado's 42nd most populous county. It has total area of 1593.24 sq mi (4126.47 square kilometre), of which, 1590.87 square miles (4120.33 square kilometre) of it is land and 2.38 square miles (6.16 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 30th largest by area in the U.S. state of Colorado.

As of the census of 2000, there were 7862 people, 3082 households, and 1920 families residing in the county. The population density was 4.9 people per square mile (1.89/kmē), it would be the 43rd most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Colorado. There were 4599 housing units at an average density of 2.9 per square mile (1.12/kmē). The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.85. In the Huerfano County, 20.9% of the population was under the age of 18, 7.3% were 18 to 24, 27.4% were 25 to 44, 27.4% were 45 to 64, and 17% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 118.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 122.8 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 7938, The racial makeup of the county was 90.1% White, 3.64% Black or African American, 3.44% American Indian, 0.52% Asian, 0.08% Native Hawaiian, and 2.23% from two or more races.
