In July 2008, its estimated population was 18810, It is 51st most populous county in Minnesota. The county spans an area of 999.39 square miles (2588.41 kmē), of which, 922.46 square miles (2389.16 kmē) of it is land and 76.93 square miles (199.25 kmē) of it is water, it is the 22nd largest by area in the U.S. state of Minnesota.
