Howard County, Maryland is a county of the United States of Maryland. The population of the county was 247842 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 274995, giving it the sixth largest population among Maryland's county. The county extends throughout a territory of 253.55 sq mi (656.69 square kilometre ), of which, 252.04 square miles (652.78 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.51 square miles (3.91 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Maryland's second smallest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 247842 people in the county, organized into 90043 households, and 65790 families residing in the county. The population density was 983.3 people per square mile (379.65/kmē), giving it the sixth most densely populated county among the Maryland. There were 92818 housing units at an average density of 368.3 per square mile (142.2/kmē). The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.18. In the county the population was spread out, with 28.1% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 34.4% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 7.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 103.5 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 107.6 females. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 274995, The racial makeup of the county was 68.22% White, 17.33% Black or African American, 0.27% American Indian, 11.91% Asian, 0.06% Native Hawaiian, and 2.22% from two or more races.
