Howard County is a county in the United States of Iowa. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 9932 inhabitants. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 9484, It is the 21st least populous county in the U.S. state of Iowa. The county spans an area of 473.76 square miles (1227.03 kmē), of which, 473.4 square miles (1226.1 kmē) of it is land and 0.36 square miles (0.93 kmē) of it is water, it is the 25th smallest by area in the U.S. state of Iowa.

The population density was 21 people per square mile (8.11/kmē), it is the 26th least populated county in terms of population density. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 26.3% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 20.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.3 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 9484, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 9400 White, 13 Black or African American, 16 American Indian, 15 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 40 from two or more races.
