Howard County is one of the 92 county of Indiana, located towards the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 84964 inhabitants. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 83381, making it the 18th most populous county in Indiana. Its area is just over 293.93 mi˛ (761.28 square kilometre), of which, 293.07 square miles (759.05 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.86 square miles (2.23 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the 11th smallest by total area in Indiana.

The population's age distribution was 25.6% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 83381, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 75104 White, 5566 Black or African American, 325 American Indian, 1054 Asian, 18 Native Hawaiian, and 1314 from two or more races.
