Houston County, Tennessee is a county located in the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 8088 inhabitants. In July 2008, its estimated population was 8137, making it the ninth least populous county in Tennessee. It covers total area of 206.92 sq mi (535.92 square kilometre), of which, 200.21 square miles (518.54 square kilometre) of it is land and 6.71 square miles (17.38 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the seventh smallest by area in the U.S. state of Tennessee.

As of the census of 2000, there were 8088 residents, 3216 households, and 2300 families in the county. The population density was 40.4 people per square mile (15.6/kmē), making its Tennessee's 20th least densely populated county. There were 3901 housing units at an average density of 19.5 per square mile (7.53/kmē). The average household size was 2.46 persons, and the average family size was 2.92 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 24.4% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 8137, The racial makeup of the county was 7702 White, 298 Black or African American, 19 American Indian, 11 Asian, 5 Native Hawaiian, and 102 from two or more races.
