Houston County is a United States county located in the United States of Alabama. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 88787 inhabitants. Its population was estimated at 98488 in July 2008, giving it the 12th largest population among Alabama's county. The county encompasses an area of 581.65 sq mi (1506.47 square kilometre ), of which, 580.36 square miles (1503.13 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.29 square miles (3.34 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the sixth smallest by total area among Alabama's county.

In the county the population was distributed as follows: 25.9% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 90.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males. Its population was estimated at 98488 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 70931 White, 25419 Black or African American, 356 American Indian, 740 Asian, 14 Native Hawaiian, and 1028 from two or more races.
