Houghton County is one of the 83 county of Michigan, located towards the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. In 2000, the population was 36016. The July 2008 population estimate is 35174, It is the 44th largest in terms of population. The county comprises an area of 1501.56 mi˛ (3889.02 sq km), of which, 1011.72 square miles (2620.34 sq km) of it is land and 489.84 square miles (1268.68 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 20th largest by total area among Michigan's county.

As of the census of 2000, there were 36016 people in the county, organized into 13793 households, and 8143 families residing in the county. The population density was 35.6 people per square mile (13.75/km˛), giving it the 22nd least densely populated county among the Michigan. There were 17748 housing units at an average density of 17.5 per square mile (6.76/km˛). The average household size was 2.39 persons, and the average family size was 3.04 persons. In the Houghton County, 21.8% of the population was under the age of 18, 19.1% were 18 to 24, 22.6% were 25 to 44, 20.9% were 45 to 64, and 15.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 113.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 115.6 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 35174, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 33433 White, 500 Black or African American, 215 American Indian, 640 Asian, 8 Native Hawaiian, and 378 from two or more races.
