Horry County is a county located in South Carolina, in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 196629 inhabitants. Its population was estimated at 257380 in July 2008, It is South Carolina's fifth most populous county. The county comprises an area of 1254.96 sq mi (3250.33 square kilometre), of which, 1133.68 square miles (2936.22 square kilometre) of it is land and 121.28 square miles (314.11 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the second largest by total area among South Carolina's county. It is ranks fifth in the size of its inland waterways in South Carolina.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 196629 residents, 81800 households, and 54515 families in the county. The population density was 173.4 people per square mile (66.95/kmē), it is South Carolina's tenth most densely populated county. There were 122085 housing units at an average density of 107.7 per square mile (41.58/kmē). The average household size was 2.37 people, and the average family size was 2.84 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 21.3% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 25% from 45 to 64, and 15% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.1 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 257380, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 213864 White, 36684 Black or African American, 1115 American Indian, 2603 Asian, 214 Native Hawaiian, and 2900 from two or more races.
