Hopatcong Borough is a borough located in Sussex County, New Jersey, in the Northeastern Region (Mid-Atlantic) of United States. As per the 2000 census, borough has a population of 15888 inhabitants. In July 2008, its estimated population was 15491, It is New Jersey's 91st largest by population . It is spread over 12.34 miē (31.96 kmē), of which, 10.96 square miles (28.39 kmē ) of it is land and 1.38 square miles (3.57 kmē) of it is water, giving it the 22nd largest by total area among New Jersey.

The population density was 1449.7 people per square mile (559.73/kmē), making it the 117th least densely populated borough in New Jersey. There were 6190 housing units at an average density of 564.8 per square mile (218.07/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.81 persons, and the average family size was 3.24 persons. In the borough the population was spread out, with 26.4% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 34.8% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 6.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 98.1 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 99.9 females. The median age is 35.7 years, the median age of male residents at 35.5 and the median age of female residents at 35.9. The racial makeup of the borough was 93.1% White, 1.95% Black or African American, 0.11% American Indian, 1.8% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, 1.61% from two or more races and 1.42% Other races.
