Holmes County, Ohio is a county located in the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 38943. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 41445, It is the 29th least populous county in the U.S. state of Ohio. The county extends throughout a territory of 424.02 mi˛ (1098.21 square kilometre ), of which, 422.99 square miles (1095.54 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.03 square miles (2.67 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 54th largest in terms of geographical size.

In the county Population was distributed with 35.6% under the age of 18, 10.4% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 17.8% from 45 to 64, and 10.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 99.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.5 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 41445, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 99.05% White, 0.38% Black or African American, 0.08% American Indian, 0.05% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.43% from two or more races.
