Holmes County is a one of the county from Florida's 67 counties, located in Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. The population of the county was 18564 as per the 2000 census data. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 19328, It is the 13th smallest county by population in the U.S. state of Florida. The county comprises an area of 488.71 sq mi (1265.75 kmē), of which, 482.45 square miles (1249.54 kmē) of it is land and 6.26 square miles (16.21 kmē) of it is water, making it Florida's fifth smallest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 18564 people, 6921 households, and 4893 families living in the county. The population density was 38.5 people per square mile (14.86/kmē), it is the 18th least populated county in terms of population density. There were 7998 housing units at an average density of 16.6 per square mile (6.41/kmē). The average household size was 2.43 persons, and the average family size was 2.92 persons. In the county Age distribution was 23.1% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 24% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 112.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 113.6 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 19328, The racial makeup of the county was 17331 White, 1419 Black or African American, 203 American Indian, 76 Asian, 7 Native Hawaiian, and 292 from two or more races.
