Hocking County is one of the 88 county of Ohio, located towards the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 28241. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 28975, It is Ohio's 15th least populous county. Its area is just over 423.6 square miles (1097.12 square kilometre), of which, 422.75 square miles (1094.92 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.85 square miles (2.2 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Ohio's 55th largest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 28241 people in the county, organized into 10843 households, and 7824 families living in the county. The population density was 66.8 people per square mile (25.79/kmē), giving it the 13th least densely populated county among the Ohio. There were 12141 housing units at an average density of 28.7 per square mile (11.08/kmē). The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 2.98. The population's age distribution was 25.5% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 25% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 99.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.9 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 28975, The racial makeup of the county was 96.88% White, 1.25% Black or African American, 0.3% American Indian, 0.35% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 1.21% from two or more races.
