Hillsborough County is a county located in Florida, in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. In 2000, the population was 998948. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 1180784, It is the fourth largest county by population in the U.S. state of Florida. The county has a total area of 1266.22 square miles (3279.49 kmē), of which, 1050.91 square miles (2721.84 kmē) of it is land and 215.31 square miles (557.65 kmē) of it is water, makes it the 12th largest by total area in Florida.

As of the census of 2000, there were 998948 people, 391357 households, and 255222 families living in the county. The population density was 950.6 people per square mile (367.03/kmē), it is the seventh most populated county in terms of population density. There were 425962 housing units at an average density of 405.3 per square mile (156.49/kmē). The average household size was 2.51 persons, and the average family size was 3.07 persons. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 25.3% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 31.7% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 12% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.7 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 1180784, The racial makeup of the county was 77.87% White, 16.64% Black or African American, 0.57% American Indian, 3.09% Asian, 0.15% Native Hawaiian, and 1.69% from two or more races.
