Highlands Town is a United States town located in the Macon and Jackson counties, North Carolina, United States. It is home to over 909 people (2000 census). As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 951, making it North Carolina's 406th largest. The town encompasses an area of 6.18 mi˛ (16.01 sq km ), of which, 6.06 square miles (15.7 sq km) of it is land and 0.12 square miles (0.31 sq km) of it is water, making it North Carolina's 138th largest by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 909 residents, 445 households, and 253 families in the town. The population density was 150 people per square mile (57.92/km˛), it would be the 54th least densely populated town in the U.S. state of North Carolina.
