Highland County is a county in the United States of Virginia. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Highland County is home to 2536 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 2426, It is Virginia's second least populous county. The county encompasses an area of 415.86 miē (1077.07 kmē), giving it the 45th largest by total area among Virginia's county.

The population density was 6.1 people per square mile (2.36/kmē), giving it the least densely populated county among the Virginia. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 19.9% under the age of 18, 4.1% from 18 to 24, 24.5% from 25 to 44, 31.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.5 males. Its population was estimated at 2426 in July 2008, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 2400 White, 12 Black or African American, 5 American Indian, 3 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 6 from two or more races.
