As of July 2008, the estimated population was 42349, It is the 57th largest in terms of population. It has total area of 557.84 mi˛ (1444.8 sq km), of which, 553.28 square miles (1432.99 sq km) of it is land and 4.56 square miles (11.81 sq km) of it is water, making it Ohio's 20th largest county by total area.

In the county Population was distributed with 27% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.8 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 42349, The racial makeup of the county was 96.46% White, 1.73% Black or African American, 0.27% American Indian, 0.49% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, and 1.02% from two or more races.
