As of July 2008, the estimated population was 42349, It is the 57th largest in terms of population. It has total area of 557.84 mi˛ (1444.8 sq km), of which, 553.28 square miles (1432.99 sq km) of it is land and 4.56 square miles (11.81 sq km) of it is water, making it Ohio's 20th largest county by total area.

In the county Population was distributed with 27% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who were 65 or older.
