Hidalgo County is a United States county located in the United States of New Mexico. The population of the county was 5932 as per the 2000 census data. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 4910, giving it the sixth smallest population among New Mexico's county. It is spread over 3445.91 square miles (8924.87 sq km), of which, 3445.63 square miles (8924.14 sq km ) of it is land and 0.28 square miles (0.73 sq km) of it is water, it is the 19th largest by area in the U.S. state of New Mexico.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 5932 residents, 2152 households, and 1543 families in the county. The population density was 1.7 people per square mile (0.66/kmē), making its New Mexico's sixth least densely populated county. There were 2848 housing units at an average density of 0.8 per square mile (0.31/kmē). The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.29. In the county Age distribution was 31.7% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 99.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 4910, The racial makeup of the county was 96.9% White, 0.65% Black or African American, 1.08% American Indian, 0.51% Asian, 0.08% Native Hawaiian, and 0.77% from two or more races.
