Hettinger County is one of the 53 county of North Dakota, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. The population of the county was 2715 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 2378, It is the 15th smallest in terms of population. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1133.7 mi˛ (2936.27 square kilometre), of which, 1132.25 square miles (2932.51 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.45 square miles (3.76 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 31st largest by area in the U.S. state of North Dakota.

The population density was 2.4 people per square mile (0.93/km˛), it is 12th least densely populated county in North Dakota. There were 1419 housing units at an average density of 1.3 per square mile (0.5/km˛). The average household size was 2.3 and the average family size was 2.89. In the Hettinger County, 23.4% of the population was under the age of 18, 3.9% were 18 to 24, 20.7% were 25 to 44, 27% were 45 to 64, and 25.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 100.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.1 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 2378, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 97.69% White, 0.17% Black or African American, 1.6% American Indian, 0.13% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, and 0.38% from two or more races.
