Hertford County is a county in the United States of North Carolina. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 22601 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 23224, giving it the 23rd smallest population among North Carolina's county. The county comprises an area of 360.42 miē (933.48 kmē), of which, 353.26 square miles (914.94 kmē) of it is land and 7.16 square miles (18.54 kmē) of it is water, makes it the 24th smallest by total area in North Carolina.

Its population was estimated at 23224 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 35.91% White, 61.56% Black or African American, 1.22% American Indian, 0.46% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 0.84% from two or more races.
