Hernando County is a county in the United States of Florida. The county has a population of 130802 as per the 2000 census data. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 171689, giving it the 27th largest population among Florida's county. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 589.08 miē (1525.71 kmē), of which, 478.31 square miles (1238.82 kmē) of it is land and 110.77 square miles (286.89 kmē) of it is water, making it the 13th smallest by size in Florida.

The population density was 273.5 people per square mile (105.6/kmē), it is 18th most densely populated county in Florida. There were 62727 housing units at an average density of 131.1 per square mile (50.62/kmē). The average household size was 2.32 people, and the average family size was 2.7 people. In the Hernando County, 18.9% of the population was under the age of 18, 5.4% were 18 to 24, 20.4% were 25 to 44, 24.4% were 45 to 64, and 30.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 90.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.5 males.
