It covers total area of 384.39 mi˛ (995.57 square kilometre), of which, 382.35 square miles (990.28 square kilometre) of it is land and 2.04 square miles (5.28 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the 51st largest by total area among Virginia's county.

In the county the population was spread out, with 22.3% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 29% from 25 to 44, 26.1% from 45 to 64, and 15% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 55316, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 75.74% White, 22.47% Black or African American, 0.23% American Indian, 0.57% Asian, 0.06% Native Hawaiian, and 0.93% from two or more races.
