It is spread over 419.98 sq mi (1087.74 sq km), of which, 416.5 square miles (1078.73 sq km ) of it is land and 3.47 square miles (8.99 sq km) of it is water, it is the 27th smallest by area in the U.S. state of Ohio.

As of the census of 2000, there were 29210 people in the county, organized into 10935 households, and 7966 families living in the county. The population density was 70.1 people per square mile (27.07/kmē), it is the 16th least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Ohio. There were 11622 housing units at an average density of 27.9 per square mile (10.77/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.62 persons, and the average family size was 3.1 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 27.6% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 14% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.6 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 28841, The racial makeup of the county was 28094 White, 282 Black or African American, 96 American Indian, 189 Asian, 5 Native Hawaiian, and 175 from two or more races.
