It has total area of 394.9 mi˛ (1022.79 sq km), of which, 392.93 square miles (1017.68 sq km) of it is land and 1.97 square miles (5.1 sq km) of it is water, making it Indiana's 52nd largest county by total area.

In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 47162, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 46082 White, 583 Black or African American, 85 American Indian, 127 Asian, 5 Native Hawaiian, and 280 from two or more races.
