Hempstead County is a county located in Arkansas, in the Southern Region (West South Central) of United States. The population of the county was 23587 as per the 2000 census data. In July 2008, its estimated population was 22900, It is the 31st largest in terms of population. It covers total area of 741.36 sq mi (1920.11 sq km), of which, 728.77 square miles (1887.51 sq km) of it is land and 12.59 square miles (32.61 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 24th largest by total area among Arkansas's county.

In the county Age distribution was 27.3% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 22900, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 15795 White, 6568 Black or African American, 114 American Indian, 69 Asian, 9 Native Hawaiian, and 345 from two or more races.
