Hawthorne Borough is a one of the Passaic County, New Jersey, located in Northeastern Region (Mid-Atlantic) of United States. The population of the borough was 18218 as per the 2000 census data. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 17997, giving it the 76th largest population among New Jersey. The borough spans an area of 3.42 miē (8.86 kmē), of which, 3.4 square miles (8.81 kmē) of it is land and 0.02 square miles (0.05 kmē) of it is water, it is the 168th largest by area in the U.S. state of New Jersey.

As of the census of 2000, there were 18218 people in the borough, organized into 457 households, and 284 families living in the borough. The population density was 5364.9 people per square mile (2071.4/kmē), making it the 99th most densely populated borough in New Jersey.
