Hattiesburg City is a city located in Forrest and Lamar counties, Mississippi, in the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 44779. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 51993, It is the fourth most populous in the U.S. state of Mississippi. It is spread over 49.67 square miles (128.64 kmē), of which, 49.26 square miles (127.58 kmē ) of it is land and 0.41 square miles (1.06 kmē) of it is water, makes it the fourth largest by total area in Mississippi.

As of the census of 2000, there were 44779 people, 17295 households, and 9396 families living in the city. The population density was 909 people per square mile (350.97/kmē), it is Mississippi's 83rd most densely populated city.
