As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 4307 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 3919, It is the 31st smallest county by population in the U.S. state of Kansas. The county has a total area of 577.73 square miles (1496.31 kmē), of which, 577.37 square miles (1495.38 kmē) of it is land and 0.36 square miles (0.93 kmē) of it is water, it is the 17th smallest by area in the U.S. state of Kansas.
